Gardening in the Natural State!

A sense of excitement is permeating Arkansas MGs as we plan the
upcoming International Master Gardener Conference we will be hosting
next spring. Previous newsletters highlighted the Peabody which is
the conference’s host hotel and some of the tours that are planned.
Schedules, prices, and itineraries are being sent out in early
October with the registration information, which is also available
on our web site. To further entice you we would like to introduce
some of the keynote speakers you can expect to hear at the
conference.
David A. Lipschitz, MD,
PhD,
Director of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging at the University
of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and author of
Breaking the Rules of Aging.
Aimed at educating and empowering the general public,
Breaking the Rules of Aging introduces Dr. David’s core
philosophy for lifelong health, highlights the key elements of
successful aging, and debunks the negative stereotypes of senior
living. His syndicated column, "Lifelong Health", appears on Sundays
in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette and is continually expanding into
other markets. Dr. David also makes weekly appearances on Little
Rock's ABC affiliate, KATV's daily news show, "Good Morning

Tina Marie Wilcox,
Head Gardener and Herbalist at the Ozark Folk Center’s
Heritage Herb Garden, Mountain View, Arkansas. In her duties at The
Ozark Folk Center, Tina Wilcox tends the extensive gardens, plans
and coordinates annual herbal events and workshops, and facilitates
the production of sale plants, seeds, and herbal products for the
park, but the public knows her best as "The Widder Wilcox of Rattle
Snake Ridge" whose "Yarb Tales" bring Ozark history alive to the

Wayne Pianta, MA,
Horticultural Science, Texas A & M, Product Technical Specialist at
Pan American Seeds (a Division of Ball Horticulture.) Since the
1990s Wayne has worked with public Botanical Gardens and Arboretums
as well as trial gardens all over the country to develop and test
new ornamental plant varieties. Before entering the private sector
his experience ranged from teaching and administering the Ornamental
Horticulture program at Tyler Junior College to his work with the
Master Gardener Program as the Extension Horticulturist for the
Texas Agricultural Extension Service. A self-proclaimed "constant
student of the trends in plants and the ornamental horticulture
industry", Wayne will speak to us about “Trends in Gardening."

George Anderson
MBE,
DHE, SHM,
FIHort has
devoted much of his working life to the training and education of
horticulturists. From
1983
to
2004 he was head of
The School of
Horticulture at
The Royal
Botanic Garden Edinburgh, which helped introduce
student gardeners to
The Diploma
Horticulture Edinburgh (DHE) course and introduced
them to the magic of horticulture and the world of plants. From his
earliest gardening experiences as a "gardener's boy" in an estate
walled garden, George has sought to share his gardening enthusiasm.
Since his retirement in 2004, George has passed on his practical
skills and gardening knowledge via his contributions to "Beechgrove
Garden", the immensely popular BBC gardening series.
