Conference News - November 2006Celebrate
Gardening in the Natural State! Time is flying by, and it is amazing how quickly we are approaching the 2007 IMGC conference. Our planning committee is hard at work putting all the details for our event together. As a reminder, the conference will be in Little Rock, Arkansas from May 2-5, 2007. Registration began in October, and we’ve already had a gratifying response. Don’t forget, the early bird discount rate ends December 31, 2006! Our reserved block of rooms at The Peabody Hotel is filling fast. We do encourage you to call soon for reservations (501-906-4000). To ensure your choices of seminars and tours, don’t wait too long to send in your registration! (There are links to the websites for room reservations and registration at the end of this newsletter.) In addition to top-notch gardening information, we want you to leave this conference with an affinity for Arkansas - our history, people, entertainment, and food. On Wednesday evening, May 2, we will start with a cash bar before our opening dinner. We’ll share pictorial glimpses of our beautiful Arkansas scenery with you as you dine and visit with fellow MGs from all over the United States and Canada. After dinner, David Lipschitz. MD, PhD, Director of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and author of Breaking the Rules of Aging, will discuss the health benefits of gardening on mind, body, and soul. More information about "Dr. David" can be found in last month’s newsletter under "News" at the official IMGC website, or you may visit his website at http://www.drdavidhealth.com/ Thursday morning we start with some fabulous keynote speakers. Everyone is excited to hear P. Allen Smith, and you are in for a treat in learning more about Heifer International from CEO Jo Luck. After the morning sessions end, lunch is served and the trade show begins. Thursday afternoon and all day Friday you have your choice of 65 seminars or 16 garden tours. All are described in more detail on the website: http://mg2007.uaex.edu/registration/speaker_biographies.htm Thursday evening we will treat you to a "Taste of Little Rock." A variety of restaurants from the Little Rock area will be serving up a sampling of their culinary specialties at The River Market, a 2-block walk or shuttle ride from The Peabody. Along the way, before or after dining, you’ll want to visit the Historic Arkansas Museum located between the River Market area and the Peabody Hotel. The museum invites you to come in and step back into frontier history as you tour the historic grounds and explore Arkansas-made art and artifacts. In keeping with the evening’s theme, you’ll also be invited to sample a taste of traditional pioneer kettle corn! For more details of what is available at the Historic Museum, visit its website at http://www.arkansashistory.com Your dessert, Arkansas strawberries and ice cream, will be served at the Old Statehouse Museum, located next door to the Peabody. (This National Historic Landmark is probably best known throughout the country as the scene of President Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 election-night celebrations.) For more information on the Statehouse visit http://www.oldstatehouse.com The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum is also located nearby, and you will have the opportunity to take the shuttle for a tour during the course of the evening. Visit http://www.clintonlibrary.gov/ to learn more about what is available there. We are going to have a great time in Little Rock in May 2007, and we want you to be a part of it! Official IMGC ’07 Website: http://mg2007.uaex.edu Peabody Hotel website: http://www.peabodylittlerock.com/ The Peabody Hotel, host hotel for the 2007 IMGC, has rooms reserved at special rates. Be sure to mention the conference when you contact them. Select “News” to see previous newsletters. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Please share this information with other Master Gardeners and County Agents in your state or province. We hope to see you in Little Rock, May 2007! - Janet B. Carson |
